The remains of a moat still surround the ruinous Slingsby Castle built for Ralph de Hastings in 1338. Indeed, the moat may well be from this time, but this remains uncertain.
The ruins we see today are from a house built on the land where Hastings castle once stood, this was the property of Sir Charles Cavendish who began building a Jacobean mansion for himself during the 17th century. For whatever reason, this was never finished and what buildings were assembled, left open to the elements soon became ruinous.
Today, visitors to the site can see the relics of corner towers and a side wall. The whole site has become attractively over-run with ivy, giving it a haunting, romantic appeal.
Like several other castle ruins throughout the land, the remains of Slingsby Castle are found on private property, the owner seems content to allow public access as there are no fences nor prohibitive signs. Care should be taken though as this beautiful piece of history is in sore need of attention to stop further decline.
Slingsby is not far from Malton and can be easily reached from Helmsley, Hovingham and Castle Howard.
